Outreach in our community

We are proud to be embedded in the Islington community.

Through our established community networks we proactively work to break down any barriers which might prevent a child or young person from participating in our work, reaching out to individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds through targeted community engagement.

Angel Shed members are often referred to us by teachers, social workers and organisations working with children and young people across the borough. Lasting engagement with our members is at the heart of our work, with young people able to stay with us from age 5 through to 19 as members, and beyond as volunteers.

We take our work into the community, delivering inclusive projects in places ranging from mainstream and special schools to refuges and community centres.

We engage in a range of outreach projects working with some of the hardest to reach members of our community.

Our active engagement in the borough includes strong connections with the council, our local MP as patron, and support through local funders.

This year at Angel Shed

Despite the restrictions of the last year we have delivered a number of projects alongside our regular workshops - with even more coming up!

Islington Council’s project aims to improve access and engagement to the arts amongst Islington residents. We were originally commissioned in 2018 to run workshops for children and young people with disabilities, and their families, and over the course of the programme we’ve reached over 150 participants. We continue to deliver workshops online and in person, with more planned throughout 2021 and 2022!

“This workshop was really great - my daughter had a lot of fun and it was very interactive. It was a real breath of fresh air in this time when there is not much to do with the children.”

The Mayor of London’s Stronger Communities Fund supported this project, with new participants joining forces with existing members of the Dance Company. The sessions took the form of weekly workshops where members developed skills in contemporary dance techniques, explored different styles of choreography and performance, and worked as an ensemble to create an original piece of dance theatre. The work, ‘Part of Something’, was filmed at the end of the project to share with families and supporters and can be viewed on Angel Shed’s YouTube channel.

“Exercise in disguise while meeting new friends - that’s a great match!”

We are excited to be celebrating our creative community by taking part in the Islington 11 by 11 Festival this summer (5 - 9th July). The festival brings together creative opportunities from 11 by 11 cultural partners open to all Islington schools and education settings. We are paired with the brilliant New River College Primary and we have enjoyed working with their amazing staff and children so much!

Summerversity gives young people aged 13+ who live or go to school or college in Islington the chance to learn new skills, develop interests and talents, make new contacts and most of all have fun. This year’s programme has over 100 courses and events. It is all being coordinated by Isledon Arts CIC who have consulted with young people and then partnered with over 30 organisations to bring together this exciting high-quality programme.

We’re running a Creative Dance project (17th - 20th August) where you can come together with a group of young people for a week of fun movement that will end in a sharing in front of a friendly audience. You will develop a new dance piece as a group, coming up with ideas through games and creative tasks while exploring the ways our bodies can move. You don't need to be a dancer or have any experience, both beginners and more advanced dancers are welcome to get involved and Angel Shed members are very welcome to join us.

Schools Outreach

Angel Shed provides high energy, fun and educational bespoke workshops in local primary and secondary schools. Our workshops can be based around a theme (decided by the school) or an original Angel Shed past production.

Our workshops focus around team-work and inclusion and sessions are designed to to build confidence, develop group cohesion, listening skills, participation and creativity.

We bring in a team of experienced staff to ensure a range of performing arts are represented (dance, drama and music) and that participants get the support they need within the workshop.

Workshops are often about 1 hour in length, but we are always happy to create bespoke projects in collaboration with the school’s needs.

Feedback from past workshops:

“Through group activities, singing and acting children developed a huge range of invaluable skills for the 21st century. These include: focus, creativity, perseverance, teamwork, risk-taking and communication. All of these skills are developed through a style of learning that is inclusive and has laughter, enjoyment and fun at its very heart!"

- Year 5 teacher, Hungerford Primary School, N7.

“a session of fun and excitement that engaged the whole class”

- Year 1 teacher, St Johns Upper Holloway, N19.

"The Angel Shed staff's energy and enthusiasm was infectious. They catered well to the different abilities and the different temperaments of the pupils. The content of the workshop was well matched their age group and everybody was able to access the work. I cannot recommend Angel Shed Theatre enough"

- Year 4 teacher, Montem Primary School, N7.

"I honestly thought it was the best workshop we have had! I watched the children's faces and they were ALL so engaged. They were very enthusiastic and their favourite part by far was the song and the moves to go with it!"

- Assistant Head teacher, St Andrews Primary School, N1.
